  • UN proclaimed the year of 2004 the Year of Rice
  • The name of rice goddess varies from nation to nation. In Java they call her Davy Sri and conduct religious performances in her honor after the rice is harvested. In Bali they call her Ibu-Padi – "the mother of rice". During the nationwide holiday "galungan" in her honor local residents they do sacrifices to her. And the tribe Karo living in Sumatra calls her Sidayan which in translation means "girl"
  • Rice is main foodstuff product for more than a half of people living on Earth
  • Approximately 100 million families in Asia and Africa are engaged in rice cultivation business
  • Annual consumption of rice grits per capita in various countries amounts to: 120 kg in China, 104 kg in Japan, 98 kg in Pakistan, 66 kg in India, 40 kg in Cuba, 6.3 kg in Italy, 2.5 kg in USA and 1.1 kg in England. The same indicator in the former USSR reached almost 6 kg of rice grits per capita.
  • Thailand, Vietnam, India and USA are the biggest exporters of rice
  • In Japanese "America" literary means "rice country".
  • Initially rice was called "Sorochinskoe millet" in Russia
  • The rice is the only crop which is not afraid of floods
  • There are 23 different varieties of this therophyte
  • Pure rice contains 14% of water, 75% of carbohydrates, 7.7% of proteins, 0.4% of fat, 0.5% of ash and 2.2% fibre
  • Rice may have various colors: coffee, red, lavender and even black. "Golden colored" rice is a result of genetic modifications and it has abundance of vitamins
